Traminette
The Traminette grape was the fifth grape to be named at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. It is a hybrid of the Gewürztraminer and Joannes Seyve 23.416. The cross was made in 1965 by H.C Barrett, then of the University of Illinois, with the intention of producing a large clustered table grape with the flavor of the Gewürztraminer.
The Gewürztraminer lineage of this variety infuses spicy succulence, while the seductive aromas of floral honeysuckle, apricots and citrus keep you wanting to enjoy another sip. It does share some characteristics with its parent, the Gewürztraminer, such as the beautiful bouquet.
Our fresh, off- dry style is perfect as an aperitif and also can be enjoyed with poultry, Asian fare or simply enjoying with a special friend. Traminette is also one of the few wines that has been suggested to pair well with sushi.
This vintage, 2008, is the first time that Penns Woods has released this wine and it is spectacular.
We are looking forward to what the future holds.
Reviews
1WineDude - "Aromatic, creamy, & surprisingly compex. If they set out to make a simple wine, they failed spectacularly."
Mark Squires, The Wine Advocate - "I thought this hybrid white wine was delightful. It is not meant to be deep and ageworthy, but it probably exceeds its initial goals. Fruity and spicy, with a gewurztraminer heritage, it is charming, distinctive and easy going, without much concentration, but with perfect balance, no bitterness and some of that gewurz typicity. This probably charmed me more than it should have, but it is a pleasure to sip. Drink it young. 87 points."
