2004 Ameritage Reserve

Ameritage Reserve

“The best of the best” is a phrase often heard, but in the case of the Ameritage Reserve, it is simply a statement of fact.  Winemaker Gino Razzi, after inspecting, tasting and retasting every barrel of Ameritage, selects those few that truly show unique and special qualities.

Each vintage of Ameritage is a new journey for winemaker Gino Razzi, as each vintage presents different qualities to be understood and expressed in the finished wine.

The 2005 Ameritage Reserve is a blend of many grapes – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese, and Carmenere. The only qualification to be part of this blend is that the grapes are the very best, and that, each in their part, contribute a quality to the completed assemblage.

Rested for 2 years in 100% new French oak barriques, this wine is deep ruby in color with a core that is nearly black. Its power and complexity dance around its freshness and vitality. This is all wine combined to make one great wine. The cassis, plum, tobacco, cedar, and sweet spice notes sing together in harmony, counterbalanced by silky tannins and a soft fleshy texture.

This wine is a great counterbalance to many dishes, but is perhaps best sipped after a meal for long hours of conversation and contemplation.

This wine can to be enjoyed now, but it will evolve with another 15-20 years in the bottle.

Reviews

Mark Squires, The Wine Advocate – “I loved the structure on this wine, something too few Pennsylvania red wines show. Of the reds, this was my pick of the litter, by a small margin, and it showed the best the next day, too. There are touches of oak, but also lovely fruit and considerable power. This has pretty good depth, and it is focused, tasty and gripping on the finish. As with the other reds, the tannins here are likely to outlive the fruit to some extent, but this has the best balance of the three. There was a hint of ripe, roasted rhubarb as a flavor nuance the next day. It continued to evolve in the glass, even after being open a day, and I will be interested to see how this holds up in a few years. Let's be conservative at the moment. 88 points.”
